Learning objective

Identify an original plan, its revision and the stated reason using evidence in a short Spanish message.

Before you begin

  • Recognize common time and place phrases.

Gather your materials

  • Paper and pencil
  • The original Spanish text and phrase bank included in this lesson

Language to know

llueve
It is raining; a weather expression.
hace frío
It is cold; a weather expression using hace.
por eso
For that reason; links an explanation to a result.
en lugar de
Instead of; marks a replacement.

Understand the concept

Original message: “Hola, equipo. Hoy llueve y hace frío. Por eso, vamos a la biblioteca en lugar del parque. Nos vemos a las tres. Traer el cuaderno. Mañana, si hace buen tiempo, podemos ir al parque.” Bank: hoy = today; mañana = tomorrow; nos vemos = see you; cuaderno = notebook; si = if. Today’s change is definite in the message; tomorrow’s park visit is conditional. A weather phrase does not tell you an exact temperature, and a conditional plan is not a promise.

Teach it step by step

  1. Read once for the overall purpose without translating every word.
  2. Highlight the words identifying today’s weather and the link por eso.
  3. Draw an arrow from the original destination to the new one using en lugar de as the clue.
  4. Separate today’s definite time/place from tomorrow’s condition. Cite the relevant sentence.
  5. Write a concise practical summary, preserving the condition rather than turning it into a guarantee.

Make the thinking visible

Worked example or model response

Today the group meets at the library at three instead of the park, because it is rainy and cold. Bring a notebook. The park is only a possibility tomorrow if the weather is good; si prevents us from calling that plan certain.

Guided practice

Together identify the item to bring and the revised location. Quote or point to the two Spanish phrases.

Independent practice

Write four facts or conditions from the message. Then evaluate “Tomorrow the group definitely meets at the park” and “Today’s meeting is at three.” Explain the evidence for each judgment.

Quick assessment

Does hace frío tell us the temperature is exactly five degrees? Explain.

Answer key & assessment criteria

Answers and teaching guidance

  1. Guided: el cuaderno is the notebook; vamos a la biblioteca gives the revised destination.
  2. Independent: rainy/cold today, library instead of park, three o’clock, notebook, and a conditional park possibility tomorrow are supported. Tomorrow definitely at the park is too strong; today at three is explicit.
  3. Assessment: no. Hace frío conveys a general weather condition here, not a measured number.

Look for: Look for preserved time reference and uncertainty. Learners should not infer an unstated weather forecast or temperature.

Make it work for your learner

More support

Use two columns labeled hoy/mañana and icons for library, park and rain. Let the learner summarize orally.

Extension challenge

Write a follow-up message changing only the time and one condition; ask a partner what remains the same.
