Coordinate plane
Draw perpendicular axes with equal unit spacing. An ordered pair tells horizontal then vertical distance from the origin.
Mr. S Teaches · Starter mini-lesson · elem-5-coordinate-planeLearning objective
Explain and practice coordinate plane using the activity and evidence, then show the reasoning behind an answer.
Gather your materials
- Paper and pencil
- Counters, blocks or paper pieces
- A ruler, clock model or grid when named in the steps
Use the items named in the teaching steps; paper models or adult-prepared photographs can replace physical equipment.
Common Core skill focus
5.G.A.1Explain coordinate axes, the origin, and the order of coordinates.
Read the official standard ↗Code and grade verified 2026-11-03. This mini-lesson addresses a selected skill, not the entire standard.
Teach it step by step
- Draw perpendicular axes with equal unit spacing.
- Label their intersection (0, 0).
- Move 3 units right along x, then 2 up along y.
- Mark and name the ordered pair.

Make the thinking visible
Example to work through together
The point is (3, 2). The first number gives horizontal distance; the second gives vertical distance.
Try the starter activity
Draw axes; move 3 units right and 2 units up.
Student practice
Plot (1, 4), (4, 1) and (0, 3) in the first quadrant or on its boundary.
Quick check for understanding
What ordered pair describes the point?
Sample answer and teacher guidance
Sample answer: (3, 2)
Listen or look for: The first two points differ because order matters; (0, 3) lies on the y-axis.
Invite the learner to explain, demonstrate, draw or dictate their reasoning. Revisit a teaching step when the explanation is unclear.
Make it work for your learner
A little more support
Use arrows labeled horizontal first, vertical second.
An additional challenge
Describe a path from (1, 4) to (4, 1) without moving diagonally.
