Make the thinking visible

Example to work through together

Turtle habitat is more focused than animal when seeking where turtles live, though the result still needs checking.

Try the starter activity

Use a teacher-approved search tool to find information about an animal. Compare search terms. Then discuss your findings with a partner or adult, using the discussion goal above.

Student practice

Compare two keyword sets for the same animal question and explain which results are useful.

Quick check for understanding

Which keywords found more useful results?

Sample answer and teacher guidance

Sample answer: Useful keywords match the information goal; the first result is not necessarily best.

Listen or look for: Useful keywords match the information goal; the first result is not necessarily best.

Invite the learner to explain, demonstrate, draw or dictate their reasoning. Revisit a teaching step when the explanation is unclear.

Make it work for your learner

A little more support

Use offline result cards and a word bank.

An additional challenge

Refine an unsuccessful query and explain how the new term changed the results.
