Learning objective

Explain and practice round to the nearest ten using the activity and evidence, then show the reasoning behind an answer.

Gather your materials

  • Paper and pencil
  • Counters, blocks or paper pieces
  • A ruler, clock model or grid when named in the steps

Use the items named in the teaching steps; paper models or adult-prepared photographs can replace physical equipment.

Make the thinking visible

Example to work through together

47 is 3 away from 50 and 7 from 40, so it rounds to 50.

Try the starter activity

Place 47 on a number line from 40 to 50.

Student practice

Round 42, 65 and 78 to the nearest ten and justify each choice.

Quick check for understanding

Which ten is closest?

Sample answer and teacher guidance

Sample answer: 50

Listen or look for: 40, 70 and 80. At 65, the standard rounding convention rounds halfway up to 70.

Invite the learner to explain, demonstrate, draw or dictate their reasoning. Revisit a teaching step when the explanation is unclear.
