Quick check for understanding

What word do these sounds make?

Sample answer and teacher guidance

Sample answer: Map.

Listen or look for: Sun, fish and stop. Fish has three phonemes; stop has four and begins with the consonant blend /st/.

Invite the learner to explain, demonstrate, draw or dictate their reasoning. Revisit a teaching step when the explanation is unclear.

Make it work for your learner

A little more support

Model slowly with counters for sounds and allow oral imitation.

An additional challenge

Ask the learner to segment a blended word back into sounds.
